AFTER a one year break, the Royal Ascot Goat Races, Kampala’s biggest social event came back in style. The event was held at Speke Resort, Munyonyo last Saturday.

There were the goat races on the one hand and competitions for fans on the other, with big prizes to be won. Food and drink outlets were all over and there was a variety of entertainment for adults and children. There was also a fireworks display in the evening.

Invitations to the hospitality tents, which included Vision Group’s Flair Magazine tent; Arab Money; UTL and Crane Bank, were the most sought after items, but some fans had to pay to enter.

By 5:00pm, Crane Bank’s general tent had run out of drinks. Of the six tents, Arab Money took the medal for the most glamorous tent because it had glamour girls, models and celebrities.

If medals were to be awarded to each tent, Flair took the medal for the most restricted tent. It was so strict that they had surplus food and drinks, which was taken back after the occasion.

Utl and Casino tents won the medal for the most drunk revellers and rude ushers, while Crane Bank’s general tent divided its guests into VIPs and regulars.

There were helicopter rides that grabbed the attention of most revellers as it was the latest entry on this year’s event. For a fee, one would grab a ride to and from Kololo airstrip.

There was also an aerobatic display of a small plane that flew upside down from the sky above the guests, causing much excitement.

The races started 17 years ago in Kampala, and have been getting better. Last Saturday’s event stood out in terms of attendance, glamour and security.

There was an arena with a giant bouncing castle, face painting and clowns, making it a memorable event for the kids.

Music, booze and babes, were in plenty as were goats, which did more grazing on the track than racing. Owners of winning goats got between sh2.5m and sh6m per race won. Interestingly, the goat with the most weird name Matako Manene, was always the last.

On a sad note, however, two children were announced lost and by press time, no parent had claimed them.
