GULU mayor Christopher Acire has defeated the incumbent area MP, David Oceng Penytoo, as FDC party flag-bearer for next year’s general polls.

According to the final results released by Denis Okot, the party returning officer, Acire garnered 245 votes, while Penytoo got only 15 votes.

FDC used the electoral college as opposed to the adult suffrage system that NRM used recently to elect its flag-bearers.

However, Penytoo rejected the results. He said in most polling stations, the names of the genuine FDC executives who were supposed to vote were deleted and replaced with fake names of voters.

“I will go ahead with my mobilisation for 2011 because I know at the end of it all, I will be the official flag-bearer of the FDC,” Penytoo said.

For the LC5 flag-bearer, Martin Ojara Mapenduzi, the district speaker, who is also the FDC party chairman in Gulu, defeated district vice-chairman McMot Kitara to become the party flag-bearer.

Ojara scored 148 votes whereas Kitara only got 26 votes. Ben Acellam pulled out of the race on the eve of the voting day.

The party returning officer said Acellam claimed Aswa MP Reagan Okumu was decampaigning and putting a lot of pressure on him to leave the race.

Kitara, who congratulated Ojara upon the victory, expressed shock over getting only two votes in polling stations like Bungatira and Laroo.

Okumu and Betty Aol Ocan, the incumbent Woman MP, were declared unopposed as flag-bearers.

In Omoro county, incumbent MP Simon Toolit Akeca got 254 votes against only 77 votes scored by Joseph Okello, the Koro LC5 councillor.

Patrick Oola Lumumba, the Gulu deputy speaker, got 130 votes to become the party flag-bearer for the Gulu mayoral race.

Benson Kilara, the deputy mayor, got 54 votes, while Alex Otim, the district secretary for works and technical services, trailed with 30 votes.
