PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni is in New York for the 65th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Museveni will join over 140 world leaders at a summit to discuss accelerated progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

With only five years left to the 2015 deadline to achieve the MDGs, the UN secretary general, Ban Ki Moon, has said there is no global project more worthwhile, urging world leaders to send a strong message of hope.
“Let us send a strong message of hope. Let us keep the promise,” he said.

With the aim of meeting the target date, the high-level general assembly will take stock of the progress so far made towards the MDGs, which include slashing poverty, combating disease, fighting hunger, protecting the environment and boosting education.

The President, who is accompanied by his wife, Janet Museveni, was yesterday received at the J.F Kennedy International Airport by Uganda’s permanent representative to the UN, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda.

Uganda’s delegation also includes ministers Sam Kutesa and Henry Okello Oryem.
This year, the UN assembly is being preceded by the MDG summit of heads of state from developing countries and development partners to review the progress made by the countries in achieving the MDGs targets.

The UN used international data from the 1990s to set targets for 2015. In Uganda, 77% of the population lived on less than a $1 (about sh2,200) a day in 1992. In 2005, the latest date from which statistics are available, 55.7% of the population lived on less than a dollar. Despite a drop in poverty, 550 women still die of pregnancy-related complications out of every 100,000 births as of 2005, and 1.2 million children have been orphaned by AIDS, according to reports.

Kuteesa, who presented a statement on MDGs in Uganda, said the country, like many other developing countries, has made substantial progress towards achieving the MDGs, with the 2010 Country MDG report revealing progress in 15 of the 21 MDG targets, seven of them being on track for achievement.

These include child and maternal health, access to reproductive health, malaria, and HIV/AIDS.
