BARBED Wire Thong is the newest live band in town. It had its first gig at Buddies in Ntinda on Monday and it will continue playing there every week.

The band comprises Shamim Asiimwe (tambourine), Isaac Zimbe (band leader and drummer), Kaggwa Seninde (keyboard), Buko Segawa (lead guitar), Charles Busulwa (bass), Rude Boy Devoh Bazanye and Don Kanta Ibanda (vocalists). EMMANUEL SSEJJENGO talked to the band members.

Why a name like Barbed Wire Thong for a band?
We looked out for a name that would create debate and excitement. We had several suggestions but settled for Barbed Wire Thong because it represents exactly what the band stands for.

Like barbed wire, it is meant to prick you. So, you picture yourself putting on a barbed wire thong. This band will give you that prickly and nice feeling.

That makes it sound like the band has been set up for only people above 18
The name of the band is simply an image to cause excitement. Our songs have strong moral themes and are comfortable for children’s listening.

What kind of music do you play?
We play different genres like jazz, soul, reggae, rock, afro-fusion and anything depending, on the audience. On Mondays at Buddies, we are laid back because we assume our audience has just been through a hectic weekend.

Throughout your first performance, you only did covers. Do you have your own compositions?
Currently we do not have our own compositions. But apart from Shamim Asiimwe, the rest of us are full time musicians and have drawn up a schedule to compose music for the band.

Most of you (six) have a background in bands like Afrigo and Misty Jazz. Is it right to brand this as the junior wing of Afrigo?
We also play with other bands. But what we do when in Afrigo, Misty Jazz or any other band is different from what we play as Barbed Wire Thong.

We have started with a rapporteur of about 100 songs and are building on that. We also play with guest artists but only if they have rehearsed with us. We are neither a junior wing nor a break-away group from Afrigo Band. You are only seeing the same faces doing something different.
