VINOD Rathod, the famous Indian Bollywood play-back singer, and the 25-year-old Anushka Machanda, had thousands of fans eating out of their palms. This was at Kati Kati grounds on Saturday during the India Day 2010 celebrations.

Not even India’s High Commissioner, Niraj Srivastava, was spared. You could tell that the usually reserved man appreciated pop culture.

This was the first time in the celebrations’ history that the annual do was held in an open air venue.

Anushka, an ex-model, talent show winner and Video Jokey, tickled the male audience with her seductive dance regimen. She sang in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telegu. Her songs like Money Money, Naughty Naughty, Oh Sexy Mama and her 2010 hit, Dil Khol Ke Let’s Rock had men roaring in delight.

Vinod, who has sung in numerous popular Bollywood films, was melancholic. His distinct flair, flexible voice and awesome songs however appealed more to female hearts. Some held their loved ones close to their chests as he performed.

The live show put together by the Indian Association of Uganda in conjunction with the Rajasthani Association, Impressario, Events Warehouse and corporate sponsors also had a cultural dance programme from all over India.

As curtain raisers, there were notable performances from the Tamil Sangan group, the Sikh Youth Federation, the Punjabi Association, The Rajasthani Association and a wonderful performance from Aparna Sharma, Miss India Uganda 2010, who did a Bollywood fusion.

India Day anywhere in the world is incomplete without music, dance and food. There was a lot on show from the different regions; our taste buds had a field day as we sampled different spiced Indian foods. As many detoured home at close to midnight, they proudly shouted, “Jai Hind!” in unison, which I later learnt means: ‘I am proud to be Indian.’
