Q

You will need to apply through the diploma holders’ entry scheme to join university. However, to qualify for admission under this scheme, you must have scored at least second-class or credit diploma and from an accredited institute. If you have these, then you can apply for any course related to your field of study (diploma).

Michael Niyitegeka, an official at Makerere University Faculty of Computing, says you can apply for courses like bachelor of science in computer science, information technology, information systems, and software engineering, among others.

Q
I am in O’level but I want to become a lawyer. Will I be offered law at university if I take a subject combination comprising computer, economics, chemistry and biology in A’level?
Anonymous

Makerere University’s spokesperson, Ritah Namisango, says bachelor of laws does not have specific essential subjects required for admission. She says once a student gets at least two principal passes in any of all A’level subjects, whether arts or sciences, they stand a chance of being admitted. However, it is still too early to conclude on the subject combination you will be doing in A’level. The combination normally depends on one’s performance in O’level.

Q
I love working with people, sharing ideas and interacting but I do not know the course I should study at the university.
Anonymous

The choice of the course usually depends on the subjects you study at A’ level. If you did art subjects, there are a number of art courses involving daily face-to-face work with different people as well as working in communities. These include social sciences, social work and social administration, tourism, education, public relations and counselling and guidance.

Dr. Paul Nyende, the coordinator of the community psychology department at Makerere University, says you can also pursue bachelor of community psychology, after which you can become a counsellor, community development worker or probation and rehabilitation officer. Kyambogo University has a bachelor of adult and community education and community based rehabilitation which you can also try.

Q
I did history divinity, geography and entrepreneurship in A’level and got 5DEEO. I joined the Uganda College of Commerce and did a Uganda Diploma in Business Studies -purchase supply and store management and got a second-class upper diploma. I want to join university but I do not know the course to do.
Stella

Makerere University spokesperson, Rita Namisango, says the second-class upper diploma is good enough to qualify you for admission to a bachelor’s degree course that is related to your diploma. Since you studied supply and store management at diploma level, she says you can pursue the bachelor of procurement and supply chain management at MUBS or bachelor of procurement and logistics management at Kyambogo.

Q
I scored DOCB6 in literature, economics, divinity and Kiswahili two years ago. Which course do I qualify for at university?
Judith

According to guidelines by the National Council for Higher Education, two principal passes obtained in the same sitting of A’ level exams is all it takes to be eligible for admission to university. You scored three principal passes. Ann Mugerwa, the academic registrar of Kyambogo University, says you are eligible for courses like development studies which require literature and Kiswahili as essential subjects. Other courses include bachelor of administrative and secretarial science and education.
