GOVERNMENT is to release an extra sh1bn as a move of seeing that the high altitude training centre set to be constructed in Kapchorwa is completed in two years and not five as earlier planned.

Ministry of education and sports permanent secretary Xavier Francis Lubanga, on Tuesday told the committee that is charged with the construction of the centre on the 200 acres land in Kapchorwa.

He announced that on project next year, as a the programme is aimed at developing sports in the country.

“Why should we wait for five years when we can do something within two years,” said Lubanga, who also promised to see that Teryet primary school, which is found on the allocated land, is modernised to become a model sports primary school to train talent from a tender age.

The sh400m is set to be used in the initial stages including the compensation of the 10 family on the land, topography, construction of the road and laying the foundation.

The meeting also received a brief from UAF president Dominic Otuchet and soccer chief executive officer Edgar Watson, about how their international affiliates will help in the formation of the centre. Rugby country manger Jacob Bukenya announced that they had contacted the Africa Rugby board to see how they can help in funding the project for the development of the game. The meeting was attended by among others commissioner for sports Dan Tamwesigire, his deputy Omara Apitta and NCS boss Jasper Aligawesa.
