BOBBY Williamson will spend the next few hours humbled in prayer as he waits anxiously for news of a scan on David Obua’s latest groin troubles.

In a sight that all Cranes faithful could have dreaded, the Hearts star crumpled to the ground in pain on 66 minutes of his team’s 2-1 defeat to Rangers on Saturday and had to be helped off the pitch.

“I strained the groin that was operated last month. I am able to walk but not sure if I can run. I will wait for the scan results,” Obua confirmed.

Obua had a scan on the troublesome groin yesterday and with the results expected at 1pm today, coach Williamson and the entire country will pray that it does not reveal serious damage.

“We will wait for the results before deciding on whether to involve him or not,” Cranes manager Cripus Muyinda stated.

Against Angola last month, Obua underlined why he is considered Cranes’ most influential figure.

Despite joining the team 48 hours before the fixture against the Blank Antelopes, the attacker-cum-midfielder proved his essential qualities – scoring the first as Cranes humiliated the oil-rich country 3-0 at Mandela National Stadium.

It’s not all lost

If Obua fails to make it, his absence will deprive the team of valuable experience but not presence, especially if Eugene Ssepuuya makes the derby fit.

Not only will Ssepuuya’s 6ft-plus-frame present a physical match for the equally gangly Kenyans but, combined with his mobility, it will transform him into a monster of sorts.

Few teams can boast a player who possesses both physical presence and sleight of foot.

Back-up plans

Williamson has recalled Pro-line midfielder Sula Matovu and Tony Odur as back-up options in case Obua fails to make it.

Matovu can strike with both feet, has a great bust of speed and control and will chip in with a few goals if given space – the kind of space that helped him to the wonder goal he struck against Kenya in the first leg of the Nations Championships qualifiers two months ago.

Serbia-based winger Vincent Kayizzi looked fit and will prove a livewire for the Kenyans on Saturday.
