OVER 290 pupils of Karunga Primary School in Bukanga county, Isingiro district, are studying under trees after heavy rains destroyed their classrooms last week.

The head teacher of the government-aided school, Rosebell Karungi, said the rains caused serious damage to four classrooms, the office and the main hall, where pupils sit for their PLE exams.

Karungi, however, added that none of the pupils was injured because they were all at home when the rains came.

About 31 pupils of Primary Seven have their classes at Karunga Church of Uganda.
Karungi appealed to the Government to provide funds for the rebuilding of the school.

She said about sh5.27m was needed for 72 iron sheets, 20 bags of cement and 3,000 bricks.

“When we talked to the LC5 chairman, Ignatius Byaruhanga, about our problem. He said the district had no budget to for schools hit by disaster,” Karungi narrated.

Byaruganga instead promised to lobby NGOs and well-wishers to support the school.
