LAST Saturday, Edna Mawia Mutua (international business administration) and Janet Nekesa (hotel and tourism management), were crowned the winner and first runner-up respectively in the Kampala International University (KIU) chapter of the Miss Central Universities auditions.

Standing beside Mutua, you could notice she held on tightly onto the hands of her fashion consultant as the results were being delivered. When Mutua returned backstage after being crowned Miss Central Universities (KIU chapter) 2010, she was in tears.

These tears were the silent expression of all her gratitude, having worked hard to reach this milestone in her life.

The event played out to a teeming audience at Club Silk as contestants graced the stage in assorted evening and casual wear while sharing their individual talents with the judges and the audience. Several upcoming artistes performed to the excitement of revellers.

If turn-up was anything to go by, it was a wildly successful event, considering that the walls of the nightclub were lined with eager fans standing as the seats were in short supply.

The contestants seemed pleased with the outcome of the night’s event. They clapped and cheered after the winners were announced. For some, this was their first time on stage while for others, it was their third or fourth competition.

However, even though this pageant is quite successful in its current form, it could use some improvement in stage preparation and content flow. The lighting on stage was limited, which made it difficult to see many details about the contestants. There were other mishaps like playing the wrong music for contestants.
