KICK-starting the launch of his Ani? album in Kampala on Friday, gospel artiste Wilson Bugembe told of how he asked God to save his concert from the chilly weather that threatened to spoil it.

He was looking at the massive audience before him in disbelief. His fans stomped the unfriendly weather to partake of the show that was studded with inspirational and jubilant worship music.

With his mass choir from Nansana’s Light the World Church, Bugembe kicked off his show with his old hit, Katonda wa Bugembe. Accompanied by UB5, a local ensemble of musicians, Bugembe took his excited fans through his seven-year musical repertoire, including songs like Mukama Njagala Kkumanya, Kijja Kuggwa, Bw’alikujjukira, Osabirawa?, Nnengera and Kani.

He used humour, sermons and testimonies of his bumpy past to keep his fans hooked. Fans shed tears when he introduced his only surviving brother, Brian Ddumba, with whom he sang a song.

He later sang off his new album, crowning it with Ani?, translated into English as Who?, in its wonder as to who could take up God’s place.

Curtain raisers included gospel artistes Herbert Twiine, D’Angelo Busuulwa and Joseph Ssegawa.

Chief guest Monica Asiimwe bought the album at sh2m and Bugembe’s portrait at sh500,000 before his long-time benefactor, Lady Marjorie, bought the album at sh1m. In all, he collected about sh4.7m.

Bugembe also had a family show at the Common Wealth Resort in Munyonyo yesterday.
