RESIDENTS of Mawanyi-Bwebajja village in Wakiso district have dragged Brig. Sam Wasswa to the Police.

They said Wasswa alias Balikalege last week led a group of over 10 armed men who caned Ivan Babu, a foreman at Bharaj temple on Entebbe Road, and threatened to shoot the workers and other residents.

Bbale Bwanika, one of the over 300 residents on the disputed land, said he survived the brigadier’s slap when he confronted him last Thursday.

The men allegedly uprooted mark stones from several plots as they ordered the residents off the disputed land.

Though clad in plain clothes, one of the vehicles that Wasswa and his men were reportedly travelling in had an army registration number.

According to the residents, Wasswa is being used by Rashid Muwanga Muyingo, a land broker, who claims the residents are occupying the 300 acres of land in Busiro block 383-391 at Bwebajja, that belonged to his late father, William Muwanga alias Ali Muwanga.

The land covers Kitende, Mawanyi, Bwebajja, Kabulamuliro, Nganjo, Ddewe, Lumuli, Makandwa, Wassozi and Ssekiwunga villages, among others.

Muyingo is a resident of Kabawo Zone in Rubaga division.

Documents seen by New Vision show that the residents bought the land, some directly from Muyingo’s father in the 1960s and 1970s.

This is the third time the brigadier is implicated in land rows.

When contacted, Wasswa denied beating anyone. He, however, did not deny involvement in the land wrangle, saying the land belongs to Rashid (Muyingo) and cautioned the residents to desist from developing it.

Gertrude Njuba, the director of land matters at State House, said in a letter to the lands ministry dated August 11, 2008 that her findings showed that Muyingo has no land and that he is involved in forgeries of related land titles and documents.
