Former Kayunga CAO jailed

THE Jinja High Court has upheld the conviction of former Kayunga district chief administrative officer (CAO) over embezzlement.

Justice Irene Mulyagonja upheld the sentence against Godfrey Bwanika, who was earlier convicted with a chief finance officer, Gerald Lutaaya Ssonko, and Herbert Masaba, an accountant.

The judge directed that each convict refund sh16m to the Kayunga local government and serves five years in prison.

On January 2, 2007, Mukono Court Chief Magistrate Elizabeth Kabanda found the three guilty of causing financial loss of over sh48m and sentenced them to three years imprisonment

Kabanda also found the convicts guilty of abuse of office and sentenced them to one year in jail or a fine of sh1m. He also ordered them to refund the sh48m.

She acquitted Bwanika and Ssonko, but convicted Masaba of theft and sentenced him to three years in jail or pay a fine of sh2m.
