WHAT would drive the organisers of the Miss All-Africa Universities pageant, based far off in Lagos, Nigeria, to bring the launch of the 2011 pageant down to Kampala?

Taylor Nazzal, the pageant’s president, gave his reason at its launch in Kampala last Friday – that Uganda is gifted with meaningful beauty.

It started with a dinner at the residence of the Nigerian High Commissioner, and then climaxed into a fun-packed event at Humura Resort, where musical performances and a micro fashion show were featured.

Flagging off the launch was patron of the pageant and First Lady of Nigeria’s richest state of Bayelsa, Alanyingi Sylva.

Also present was the current Miss All-Africa Universities, Lawrence Powede from Nigeria, and some beauties who represented their countries’ universities in the 2010 pageant, which was held in Bayelsa State in April.

Among them was Makerere University’s Winnie Nantumbwe, who represented Uganda, plus others from Sudan, Tanzania, Zanzibar and Zimbabwe.

The Ugandan representative in the 2011 pageant will be selected from the various Ugandan universities next month, and will contest at the finale, which will be held in South Africa next year.

The patron, whose state is the sponsor of the pageant, warned that this pageant is really about women of substance and not just physical beauty.

She said it is aimed at having whoever takes part in it come out as an agent of progress in society other than just a glamour girl.

“This is the reason our pageant is a non-bikini pageant. Our call for girls of substance is also the reason the United Nations took the pageant under its umbrella as one of its tools to empower women by equipping the beauty queens with skills to spearhead women’s causes,” explained Sylva.

She commended Nantumbwe for being disciplined and cultured at the 2010 pageant, where she won the award for most well-behaved contestant.

Ugandan Sarah Nyamwenge, who is the pageant’s coordinator in East Africa, organised the event on behalf of the pageant’s organising team.
