FORUM for Democratic Change supporters yesterday exchanged blows with party officials as they tried to lock the gate to block the Kampala Woman MP, Nabilah Nagayi, from leaving the party premises.

This was after Nagayi and her supporters stormed the party’s weekly press briefing and accused the party’s electoral commission chief, Dan Mugarura, and other officials of promoting sectarianism in the party.

The officials and party supporters accused Nagayi of breaking the party rules by disclosing in-house issues in a wrong forum without permission.

However, Nagayi’s supporters managed to overpower the officials.

“We cannot sit and look on as our party is getting messed up. It will collapse if these issues are not solved,” Nagayi stated.

The party’s grassroots primary elections in Kampala to select the official flag-bearers were last month stopped after irregularities were cited during the process. To date, the party has not communicated when fresh elections will be held.

Nagayi said Mugarura and other high-ranking officials in the party have been influencing the elections and party structure formation for their interests.

“There is an imbalance in the main party positions. All positions are managed by those from western Uganda,” she said.

Nagayi cited Jack Sabiti, who is the party treasurer, Ingrid Turinawe, head of the women’s league, Mugarura and Frank Mwijukye as some of the officials from western Uganda holding major positions in the party.

Mugarura denied the allegations, saying whatever Nagayi said was not true. “We have put up party structures everywhere in the country and are in the process of organising fresh elections,” he said.
