PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has pledged more support to Moses Kipsiro in the athlete’s quest for more medals.

Museveni, who hosted the Commonwealth Games team to a dinner on Sunday, also instructed the sports ministry to document the country’s sports records. He rewarded Kipsiro with sh20m (cash) for his two gold medals at the Games.

A visibly happy president, flanked by first lady Janet Museveni, shared a dinner table with the double Commonwealth gold medallist Kipsiro and wife Berna at Entebbe State House.

The dinner was to welcome back the team from the Games in the Indian capital, New Delhi

“I congratulate all of you, but in particular, I congratulate Moses Kipsiro for the achievement. We shall give you all the support so that you win more medals,” promised the President.

“In future we must do much more for sports,” said the president before thanking other groups, including the Asian Community, for their support to the team.

“I thank all those who support sports. I encourage you to do more. In future government will also do much more.”

The President also encouraged Ugandans to take on sports not only for competitions but for their health.

Museveni went through Uganda’s sporting history, but noted that records were not documented anywhere.

Earlier on, the President had smiled as he listened to Kipsiro’s tale of how he felt like a soldier in battle and how Museveni’s phone call had encouraged him to fight on for another medal.

“It was not easy. For the second final, I ran recalling your phone call that wished me all the best,” said Kipsiro.

Museveni also promised to build an athletes’ camp house in Kipsiro’s village in Bukwo. He will also improve the Amanang field, in the same area, to boost training.
