DEFENDING champion Jasper Kamukama will have to fend off a formidable challenge from Lusaka Golf Club lady captain Mono Mwila in the Uganda Ladies Open that tees off in Kampala on Friday.

Mwila (h/c10) has confirmed participation in the 54-hole tournament also expected to attract competitors from Kenya, Tanzania and hosts Uganda.

The Zambian will add the foreign challenge that is usually posed by Kenyan golfers led by 2008 champion Mary Karano.

Tanzanian Angel Eaton (h/c4) and Machakos club captain Mungeri Nzoika (h/c10) are expected to feature prominently in the tournament organised by the Uganda Ladies Golf Union (ULGU).

Kamukama, who is also the ULGU secretary, said registration for foreign competitors had been left open to allow more international participation.

“Our experience is that many Kenyan ladies who have competed here before normally register on arrival. We expect a big turn out as usual and we are ready to host them,” Kamukama stated.

The main event will feature golfers between handicap 0-18 while the rest and men will play in the subsidiary event.

The tournament ends on Sunday.
