Mbarara gets free eye clinic
A total of 1,587 eye patients thronged Ruharo Eye Centre in Mbarara district last week to receive free treatment. Over 30 children below the age of eight were among the 236 patients who received free eye surgery, according to Joseph Magyezi, a senior officer in-charge of the surgical camp. The hospital administrator, Richard Womugasho, said the one-week camp that started on Monday was aimed at helping poor people access free eye treatment. It was organised by Ankole Diocese and the Christian Blind Mission, a Germany-based organisation.

Minister tips on water harvesting
The water minister, Maria Mutagamba, has urged Ugandans to harvest rain water, saying it is cheap and not labour intensive. She said only 65% Ugandans harvest rain water in their homes. Mutagamba was speaking during the fundraising ceremony for a bus at St. Mary’s College Rushoroza. She contributed four water tanks, each with a capacity of 10,000 litres, and two ecosan toilets.

25-year-old held over defilement
The Police in Mbarara are holding a 25-year-old man on allegations that he defiled a five-year-old girl in Nyaruhamba village, Biharwe sub-county in Mbarara district. South-western regional police spokesperson Polly Namaye identified the suspect as Julius Nuwagira. Nuwagira allegedly defiled the girl on October 11 when she was left at home with him. The girl’s parents say they caught him in the act.
