EDITOR: The recent months have revealed massive motor vehicle robberies and gruesome murders of victims by a very organised group that has been at the helm of this heinous crime for several years.

The development reminds Ugandans of the early days of this decade when armed robberies had literally taken over Kampala with the infamous 'Black and Company' getting as bold as to challenge Brigadier Kayanja's Operation Wembley that the President had constituted to curb lawlessness. Robbers could surface from nowhere in the middle of the city and cause mayhem which ended claiming tens of lives.

Given the trend surrounding vehicle robberies, it seems it is time to return to the Wembley days. Granted, the Police have to investigate but hard lessons must be taught to those who continue to think they can kill just for a car! The special hire drivers that have been massively targeted by such thugs should be protected. This segment of our society is a mass employer of Ugandans and above all, facilitates sectors like general commerce and tourism.

Its stability is of great importance to the economy. My humble message to the Police is that such hardcore criminals cannot be adequately handled by our criminal justice system. Given that they are said to possess firearms that are the preserve of the armed forces; efforts should be made to have them expeditiously prosecuted by the Military Court Martial. This will deter others from getting involved in such crimes. This is urgent because the situation might get out of hand.
