THE Kenyan government will finance hundreds of soccer fans for the crucial return leg of the Africa Nations Cup against Uganda Cranes in Kampala.

Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka said the decision by the government to sponsor many fans was reached after the Uganda government ferried hundreds to Nairobi for the first leg encounter between the two nations a fortnight ago.

“Prime Minister Raila Odinga and I were at the stadium on that day when the Cranes took on Harambee Stars. They brought over 5,000 fans and over 88 buses were parked near the stadium,” he said.

Kalonzo said the move by Ugandans was a direct challenge to the Kenyan government and they have decided to respond in a big way.

The VP said besides sponsoring the fans, the government delegation will lead supporters of the national team during the return leg in October next year.

Buoyed by their fans, the Cranes shrugged off Kenya’s star studded team and home support to settle for a 0-0 draw and boost their chances of playing in the finals of the Nation’s Cup for the first time since 1978.

Uganda leads group J with four points. Angola and Guinea Bissau have three points apiece and Kenya just one point.
