I sat Senior Six in 2007 and got ODCB in biology, agriculture, geography and economics (BAG/E) plus C4 in general paper. I am now 26 years old. Can I get a position at Makerere or Kyambogo University? Eddy
Makerere University former deputy registrar for admissions, Vincent Ekwang, says you are still eligible for admission despite having sat A’ level in 2007. Two principal passes is the minimum admission requirement. He says since you scored three principal passes, you can be admitted for courses like Bachelor of Arts in economics, whose essential subject is economics. Other courses you can try include education, social sciences and procurement and logistics management which are non-restrictive on subjects studied at A’ level. If you fail to qualify through the direct entry scheme, Ekwang says you should try the mature age entry programme since you are above the required minimum age (25 years).

I did PCB/Maths and scored EODO. What degree course do I qualify for? Denis
Two principal passes scored in A’ level is all it takes to get admission to university through the direct entry scheme, according to guidelines set by the National Council for Higher Education. Ann Mugerwa, the Kyambogo University academic registrar, says since you scored principal passes in physics and biology, you can try applying for courses like Bachelor of Science with education, library and information science, and records and archives management.
Others include population studies and tourism, among others, that are non-restrictive on subjects.

I scored BCCC in HEG/French with a failure in G.P. I would like to do ethics and development studies from Nkozi University. Despite warnings that there are minimal jobs available for the course, should I pursue my dream? Kean
Students who study ethics and development studies can get jobs in non-governmental organisations and local governments among other areas. Ismail Mulindwa, an education officer in the Ministry of Education, observes development studies best suits people who want to upgrade from bachelors to masters degree level. However, he says that it is important for one to pursue a career they are interested in, so long as they scored the minimum points required for admission.

I am an S.5 student offering geography, economics, agriculture, and fine art. I wanted to do bachelor of science (agriculture) at Makerere. What courses do I qualify for? Joel Elwoku
According to Makerere’s admissions booklet, chemistry is the essential subject for Bsc agriculture; it is multiplied by three when calculating the cut off points. The second essential subject is picked from the best done of biology and agriculture. Hence, it might be hard for you to get admitted if you apply for Bsc agriculture because its essential subject — chemistry -— is not among the subjects you are studying at A’ level. But the university’s deputy registrar for admissions, Vincent Ekwang, says you can try bachelor of agribusiness management and bachelor of agricultural and rural innovation, which require both agriculture and economics as essential subjects.
You can also try applying for courses like education and economics, among others.

I hold a diploma in secretarial studies and a UNEB certificate (stage 2 and 3 in all subjects). Do I qualify for a bachelor’s degree in secretarial studies at Kyambogo University through the diploma holders’ scheme? Florence Adongo
The course Kyambogo offers is called Bachelor of administrative and secretarial science. According to the Joint Admissions Board guidelines, you can be eligible for admission if you scored at least a second class or credit diploma.
