A total of 636 students on Friday graduated from Uganda Technical College (UTC) in Lira district.

During the ceremony held at the school, the students were awarded ordinary diplomas and certificates in water engineering, building and construction, information and communication technology and mechanical engineering, among others.

In a speech read by Ilahi Mansur, a commissioner in the education ministry, higher education state minister Mwesigwa Rukutana said they would increase the number of government-sponsored students in each college from 250 to 320 beginning this financial year.

He said in professional fields like engineering, there should be a ratio of at least five technicians to one graduate engineer and also 10 crafts persons to a technician.

Rukutana said through funding from the Islamic Development Bank, UTC Lira, Unyama National Teachers college and UTC Elgon would be rehabilitated and equipped.
