THE Deputy Chief of Defence Forces has asked armies in Africa to adopt common methods of training in the quest for peace on the continent.

Lt. Gen. Ivan Koreta noted that working with people of different backgrounds, cultures and modes of operation in peace keeping, disaster mitigation and aid work is a major challenge to the military in Africa.

He added that the militaries also work in multinational environments, along with civilian personnel.

“If, however, they are exposed to a common mode of training, it would perhaps become somewhat easier for each to be able to decipher what action or effect the other is looking for,” Koreta said

He made the remarks while opening the fourth African Conference of Commandants (ACOC) at the Nile Resort Hotel in Jinja on Monday.

Koreta noted that the East African armies were working on having common training areas. Tanzania is to host cadet training, with Uganda hosting command and staff training. The higher National Defence College is slated for Kenya.

“We have done a number of exercises together whereby sister countries move whole units with their affiliated weaponry and equipment across borders for exercises,” he said.

At the same function, Maj. Gen Andrew Guti, the commandant of the senior command and staff college, Kimaka in Jinja, was named ACOC chairman, replacing Gen. Ahmed Abd Allah, his counterpart in Egypt.
