CABLE Corporation over the weekend emerged the best during the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) Champion of Quality Awards.

A.K Oils & Fats, a subsidiary of the Mukwano Group of Companies, took the best foods and agriculture accolade.
Multiple Industries, Movit Products and Kasese Cobalt were the other companies recognised at the Kampala ceremony.

Mukaira Foundation, which produces wine, was recognised as the best new entrant. Ibrahim Bossa, the UNBS principal marketing officer, explained during the annual quality gala that the companies were assessed on certification schemes of products and management.

He said 76 companies are certified for product schemes and 11 for management. Under these schemes, UNBS regularly inspects the companies to check their quality in addition to other audits.

“These companies were only checked on their continuous improvement, number of the products certified, and the extent of conformity to standards,” Bossa pointed out.

“Certification is the only way to prove to the consumers and regulatory authorities that a particular product conforms to national and international standards,” Dr. Terry Kahuma, the UNBS boss, said,

“Standards underpin consumer confidence that products purchased are safe, reliable and fit for purpose,” Kahuma added.

The Vice-President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, in a speech read by state minister James Baba, said a strong private sector was best suited to spearhead Uganda’s industrialisation.
Bukenya disclosed that the Government was preparing necessary laws to fight counterfeits.
