DEFENDING champion Stephen Kasaija was frustrated by woeful putting as he lost the Rwanda Golf Open title to Kenyan Joseph Karanja in Kigali yesterday.

Kasaija who went into the decisive round six seven strokes behind Karanja could only shave off two shots with a closing round three over par 75.

“It was possible to catch up but I have missed short putts which cost me the title,” Kasaija said.
Kenya Nelson Mudanyi finished third while Ugandan Emma Opio squeezed into fourth. Uganda Open champion Brian Mwesigwa, who put up a big fight in the first two rounds, was out of the top five.

In the professional event, Ugandan Deo Akope’s title quest collapsed as Kenyan Dismas Indiza thrust from five shots a drift to claim victory.

Indiza lined up seven birdies that he spiced up with an eagle on hole 18 to win the tournament.

Akope was fourth, one stroke further down the leader-board.
Meanwhile Phillip Corry adds that former tennis player James Odong, playing off handicap 18 scored the highest points to claim the prestigious Entebbe Open on Saturday.

Odong scored 41 stableford points to beat a strong field of 142.
Entebbe Club is one of the oldest golf clubs in East ern Africa, having been founded in 1901. The event was held to commemorate the opening of the club’s Club House in 1915.
