THE Electoral Commission in Gulu on Monday refused to nominate Maliam Abe Okelo as the eighth candidate in the Gulu municipality mayoral race because her name was missing from the voters’ register.

The returning officer, David Butti Enyanzo, said they could not nominate Abe Okelo because she was not a registered voter.

Enyanzo noted that the seven candidates so far nominated were George Labeja (NRM), Walter Odong (UPC), Patrick Oola Lumumba (FDC) and Robert Adonga-Kullu (DP).

Alex Otim, Benson Kilara and Eng. Noah Opwonya are all contesting as independent candidates.

Abe Okelo, 68, a retired nurse, said she had no problem pulling out of the race, but added that she would miss servicing the needy people.

“Some of the immediate tasks that I wanted to tackled upon being elected the mayor of Gulu municipality included rehabilitating and relocating the children loitering on the streets of Gulu and reviewing the budget of Gulu through transparency and fiscal accountability,” she said.
