OVER 30 families in Nkokonjeru and Bujowaali villages in Buikwe district have refused to vacate their homes. The eviction notice was served by Geoffrey Wasswa who claims to own the land.

The families have asked the Jinja district Police commander, Jonathan Musinguzi, to arrest Wasswa and his men over destrying gardens and household property.

The residents raised complaints about the harassment during a meeting at Bujowaali. It was attended by Musinguzi and the area MP, Onyango Kakoba, last Friday. The meeting was also attended by Andrew Gidoi, the Njeru Police post boss.

Charles Kyesigomu, a resident, said Wasswa hired kanyamas (muscular men) to evict them and fenced off the land. “I was recently attacked in my home at night. I was beaten by Wasswa’s men. I reported to Njeru Police post but they have done nothing,” Kyesigomu said.

Nelson Asega narrated how his family was thrown out of their house by Wasswa’s men, who were accompanied by Police officers from Njeru Police post.

Mustafah Batwala, another resident, said Wasswa did not inform the LCI chairperson about the eviction. Onyango Kakoba said the Police were investigating the matter to find out the rightful owner

Musinguzi told the residents to stay in their houses, adding that nobody should evict then until investigations are complete. He ordered Gidoi to arrest Wasswa and his men.

The area LC1 chairman, Edirisa Isiko, said Wasswa claims to have bought the 63 acres of land from Miriam Nankabirwa in 2003.
