A total of 83 candidates were nominated in Rukungiri district to contest for the different seats. Three of the candidates are contesting for the district chairmanship and two for municipal mayor.

Candidates for the district chairmanship are Charles Byabakama (NRM), Capt. Joram Ndiho (FDC) and Charles Katebire (independent).

Those in the mayoral race are Charles Makuru (FDC) and Saleh Turyamureeba (NRM).

The district and municipality nominations that kicked off on Thursday last week, ended on Tuesday in the whole country.

Rukungiri district registrar Agnes Nakalembe said the exercise was peaceful. “We did everything possible to finish in time. Most candidates were nominated in the first three days. Only six turned up on the last day,” Nakalembe said.

She said 10 candidates were nominated as independents. Nyakishenyi sub-county registered three independent candidates contesting for district councillorship, while Bwambara and Nyarushanje had two independents each. Others were in Kebisoni and the eastern division.

Only one candidate, Mwanza Habibu (FDC) of Rwakabengo ward in Rukungiri municipality, was nominated unopposed, according to Nakalembe.
