A total of 65 candidates have been nominated to contest for the different positions in Mbale district.

The incumbent chairman, Bernard Mujasi (NRM), is facing Abdu Masaba, the FDC district chairperson and Washaki Wambulu (independent). Masaba contested against Mujasi in the 2006 elections and lost.

The mayoral seat has attracted eight candidates. These are Siraji Mugoya (independent), Michael Nandala (independent), Jamila Naleba (NRM), Waswa Masokoyi (Independent), Juma Abdallah Wanade (Liberal Democracy Transparency Party), Zandya Mutwalibi Mafabi (FDC), Davis Mwaule (independent) and Alfred Magomu (independent).

Most of the candidates in the mayoral race chose to contest as independents following the disputed results in the NRM primaries.

Umar Kiyimba, the electoral commission returning officer, said most candidates went through the vetting process easily since they turned up with all the requirements.

Kiyimba added that the commission would meet all the candidates to draft a campaign programme.

“We want to avoid a situation where two candidates hold rallies in the same place at the same time,” Kiyimba said.
