THE High Court in Luweero has sentenced a man to 30 years imprisonment for brutally killing his 70-year-old aunt over land wrangles.

Samuel Kaye, 30, a resident of Munyolwe village, Kasangombe sub-county in Nakaseke district, was recently sentenced by High Court judge Benjamin Kabiito, after pleading guilty to killing Teopista Nakanyike by hitting her on the head using a blunt object.

Prosecution, led by Robert Nanima, the Nakaseke resident state attorney, said Kaye committed the offence on April 3.

A postmortem report by Dr. Emmanuel Mukunya indicated that the deceased’s body had bruises on the neck, a cut on the jaw and three broken teeth.

Nanima said Kaye, together with his brother, Andrew Luwandagga, assaulted the deceased at her home.

After the act, Nanima said, Kaye tried to flee but was arrested by residents, who handed him over to the Police.

The prosecution asked court to give Kaye a maximum sentence of death.

The accused’s lawyer, Sowali Katamba, however, prayed for a lighter sentence, saying Kaye was a young offender, who would reform once given a second chance.

Katamba also said his client had been on remand for one year and seven months and was the sole breadwinner for his family.

In his ruling, Kabiito blamed Kaye’s family for having failed to resolve the land dispute, which led to the murder.

He said Kaye deserved a tough punishment since he had not shown remorsefulness.
