A total of 21 workers of Tilda Uganda Limited (former Kimbimba rice scheme) on Friday appeared before court in Bugiri district charged with destruction of property.

Prosecution said the workers went on strike on November 16, destroying property worth over sh130m. This was at the factory premises in Buwuni trading centre in Bulesa sub-county.

The workers were reportedly protesting the poor working conditions and low pay. The workers are reportedly being paid sh1,750 per day.

Work at the factory was paralysed for over six hours as the Anti-riot Police and the Rapid Response Unit battled with the over 2,000 workers, who had blocked the Bugiri-Tororo highway.

The workers, who had at first gone on a sit-down strike, later became violent after their employers failed to respond to their requests to join a workers’ union.

Hearing of the case resumes on November 25.
