TWO MPs from Lango, who defect to the FDC from UPC, decided to run as independents in the coming parliamentary elections.

Ben Wacha of Oyam North and Charles Angiro Gutomoi of Erute North declined to contest on the FDC tickets, citing the law.

Angiro, Wacha, Cecilia Ogwal and B`Leo Ojok of Kioga, declared their alliance to the FDC two months ago and promised to contest on its ticket.

The four legislators contested as independents in the 2006 elections after falling out with the UPC party under the leadership of Miria Obote.

However, Ogwal disclosed that she would contest on the FDC ticket.

But Angiro said he was standing as an independent because the law barred him from contesting under any party.

Lira district FDC chairman Patrick Ayena Okello said: “In FDC, there is freedom of entry and exit. If someone comes today and moves out tomorrow, we refill.”

He added that although the former UPC bigwigs were not running on the FDC ticket, they were still mobilising for the party.

Wacha declined to comment, saying his position would be clear on the nomination day.

In another development, Ayena said FDC had failed to field candidates for the Lira municipality MP seat, Otuke county, Kole Woman MP, Lira mayoral seat, Maruzi county and for Apac Woman legislator.

He said they also failed to get candidates for LC5 chairmanships for Otuke, Alebtong, Apac and Oyam districts.

“But we managed to field Dr. Alex Okot for Moroto county, Betty Umar for Oyam Woman MP seat, Paul Amoru Omiat for Dokolo county and Tom Odur Anang for Kwania county,” Ayena said.
