PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has pledged sh50m towards the rehabilitation of Prince William Gabula Nadiope’s palace at Budhumbula in Kamuli district.

Part of the money will also be used in the reconstruction of the tombs of the late Sir Wilberforce Gabula Nadiope, Uganda’s first vice-president under the Milton Obote I government and Kyabazinga of Busoga.

Prince William Gabula Nadiope of Bugabula chiefdom is a grandson of Wilberforce Nadiope.

Representing the President, gender, labour and social services minister Gabriel Opio handed over a medal to Prince Nadiope in recognition of his late grandfather’s role in securing Uganda’s independence.

This was during a fundraising ceremony at Budhumbula in Kamuli district on Saturday.

The move to improve the palace and royal tombs was initiated by the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, and other Basoga who hail from Bugabula.

Nadiope commended Museveni for his love and support for Busoga. He called upon the Basoga to promote hygiene in their homes.

He urged them to educate their children and work together to fight the biting poverty in the region.

Fred Menhya Kakaire, the Issabalangira of Busoga, revealed that the 11 hereditary chiefs of Busoga had appointed Prince Nadiope the Kyabazinga of Busoga and were awaiting installation.

Busoga Kingdom has been embroiled in wrangles over the Kyabazingaship, with one group supporting Nadiope and the other in favour of Edward Wambuzi, heir to the late Kyabazinga Henry Wako Muloki Wambuzi.

Meanwhile, Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) presidential candidate Olara Otunnu abandoned his campaign programme in Luwero district to attend the fundraising function.

Otunnu was accompanied by other UPC stalwarts who included David Pulkol, Patrick Mwondha and Robert Kanusu.

Otunnu described Sir Wilberforce Nadiope as a nationalist who worked hard for the unification and development of not only Busoga, but Uganda as a whole.

“Nadiope’s golden era was of prosperity and unity,” Otunnu said.

During Nadiope’s reign, he said, Jinja was the industrial hub of Busoga, but the industries have since collapsed due to bad governance.

He pledged to revive the region’s past glory once UPC comes into power.

He, however, left without pledging anything towards the reconstruction of the palace, which annoyed some organisers.

“What did he come for? It was not in order for such a diplomat not to pledge anything at this function,” one of the organisers said.

“Otunnu gate-crashed the function,” another organiser was overheard complaining.

Dr. David Kazungu, a mobiliser, revealed that over sh82m was collected during at the function; sh4m in cash, sh500,000 in cheques and sh77.5m in pledges.

Kadaga said the rehabilitation works would start soon.
