RESIDENTS of Mitooma district have complained that conflicts among top district leaders might retard development in the area despite government efforts to bring services closer to the people.

This followed the failure of Maj Gen Kahinda Otafiire, the area MP, to turn up for the launch of Kansheshero Town Council.

He was instead represented by Jaffari Bassajjabalaba, the Bushenyi district vice-chairman.

The residents’ concerns were contained in a speech by the Kansheshero Town Council chairman, Bikorwa Bataringaya, at the official launch of the town council at Kashenshero market.

“If lack of cohesion among our political leadership is not checked, we are heading for trouble,” Bikorwa noted.

One of the conflicting factions in the district backs Otafiire, while the other is led by Benon Karyaija, the district chairman.

The factions originated from disputes over the splitting of Bushenyi district; an idea that Otafiire opposed.

Gordon Arinda, the Kashenshero Town Clerk, said there was need for political will in order to transform the area.

He said Otafiire had never visited the district since its creation.
