Rwenzori region gets 41 nominees on first day

A total of 41 people were yesterday nominated in the Rwenzori region to contest for parliamentary seats.

A total of 41 people were yesterday nominated in the Rwenzori region to contest for parliamentary seats.

Kamwenge district returning officer Vally Kanziira said Hellen Karungi, who will take on five men for the Kitagwenda county seat, was nominated at midday at the district headquarters.

Karungi, who is standing on an independent ticket, will face Nuru Byamukama (NRM), Abbas Agaba (Independent), George Spencer (Independent), Damien Mutahigwa (DP) and Joseph Ruhweza (FDC).

Woman MP contestants Dorothy Shaija (NRM) and Idah Mehangye (Independent) will compete to be Kamwenge Woman MP. Frank Tumwebaze (NRM) is vying for the Kibale county seat.

In Kabarole district, people were shocked when Woman MP Margaret Muhanga was nominated as an independent candidate.

Muhanga had been silent after losing in the NRM primaries to Victoria Rusoke, who was also nominated yesterday.

Local government minister Adolf Mwesige (NRM) was nominated at 11:30 for the Bunyangabo constituency seat.

Mwesige will compete with James Ategeka (Independent) and Dick Katongole (FDC), also nominated yesterday.

Christopher Kayonga was nominated on the NRM ticket for the Burahya county race.

Alex Ruhunda was nominated the NRM flag-bearer for Fort portal municipality together with Solomon Akugizibwe (FDC).

Kabarole district returning officer Suleiman Kato said the Electoral Commission had halted the nomination of John Isingoma because his registration status was not clear.

In Kyenjojo district, Linda Timbigabwa (NRM), Theresa Kabasinguzi (Independent), Miriam Kesiime (Independent) and the current district Woman MP, Joyce Babiha, were also nominated. Babiha will contest as an independent candidate.

Kyenjojo district returning officer Fred Muwaya said David Muhumuza’s nomination was delayeld for four hours waiting for clarification from the NRM electoral commission on their candidate for Mwenge North.

There was confusion between Muhumuza and Tom Butime, whose win was nullified by the party commission. Butime is set to be nominated tomorrow as an independent.

Investment state minister Aston Kajara (NRM), James Kaliija (FDC) and Perez Musinguzi (UPC) were cleared to run for the Mwenge South MP seat.

In Kyegegwa district, Flavia Rwabuhoro was nominated as the NRM’s flag-bearer for the Woman MP seat.

Jackson Kafusi (FDC), William Kwemara (NRM) and Badru Katongole were cleared to stand for the Kyaka county race.

Nine people were nominated in Bundibugyo District. They include higher education minister Kamanda Bataringaya (NRM) for Bwamba county, Joshua Mwesige (Independent) and Vivienne Baguma (Independent).

Apollo Sande (FDC), Acrobat Kiiza (NRM) and the incumbent Joseph Matte (Independent) were cleared to contest for Bughendera county seat.

Jane Alisemera, the Bundibugyo District Woman MP, was nominated as an independent candidate. She will face Harriet Ntabazi (NRM) and Cissy Semuhemba (FDC) in the race.

Dr. Brian Asiimwe (NRM), Muswahili Muhendwa (DP), Rose Mugerwa (NRM) and Jennifer Mujungu (Independent) were also nominated.
