POLICE in Sironko district battled with supporters of Beatrice Wabudeya and Nathan Nandala Mafabi who confronted each other in the middle of the town and brought business to a stand still.

The supporters exchanged blows and vulgar words for about five minutes prompting shopkeepers to close for fear of looting.

Peace was restored when the heavily deployed Police officers intervened.

Wabudeya was nominated at around 12:00pm and Mafabi at 2:00pm.

The town was painted with yellow T-shirts and blue T-shirts with loud music and drumming as supporters danced to kadodi beat.

In Bulambuli district, the nomination exercise was conducted in the bedroom of a private house where it only kicked off at 11:00am.

The returning officer, Christine Kunihira, said the electoral commission had no money to construct offices.

She added that they had been operating in the house for three months.

Several candidates could not locate the offices which had no sign post, until a temporary one was designed.

Out of the nine that picked forms for nominations, only seven were nominated today.

They were Nangoli Martin, an independent, Samuel Gashari (FDC), for Grace Nambozo, for woman member of Parliament (FDC), and Milton Makayi (independent).

The rest were Christopher Mwambu, an Independent, Julius Wakonyasi, UPC and Fredrick Gimamang, an independent.

In Mbale, the nominations went on peacefully with 50 people picking the forms from the electoral commission to contest for parliamentary seats.

The streets were fully packed with people and cars that escorted the candidates to the nomination grounds at the municipal council.

Bars even increased the costs of beer from sh2,000 to sh2,500 due to the high demand. The Police also battled with the LC3 chairperson of the industrial division in Mbale municipality, Massa Musa of FDC who was using a government motorcycle in the nomination drive.

Michael Werikhe, the housing state minister, will be nominated on an NRM ticket today.

Others nominees include Yahya Gudoyi and Mariam Nagudi, FDC, Connie Galiwango, the woman MP Mbale, NRM, and Eric Sakwa UPC.

Others were Richard Masaba, Independent, Jack Wamayi FDC, Shinyabulo Mutende, and Gashom Wambede, North Bungokho (FDC).
