ENERGY state minister Eng. Simon D’Ujanga has stepped down as an independent candidate for Okoro county in Zombo district.

This was after the NRM electoral commission confirmed Stanley Omwonya, the former under secretary of the Uganda Lands Commission, as its flag-bearer.

D’Ujanga had petitioned the commission, opposing Omwonya’s victory in the primaries and had vowed to contest as an independent.

“I cannot stand as an independent candidate because our (NRM) constitution does not allow us to do so. I will talk to my supporters to vote for the candidate I will decide on,” D’Ujanga said.

However, six MP aspirants were nominated by the Zombo district returning officer, Richard Nsuube, at Paidha town yesterday.

They were Omwonya (NRM), Robert Ogen (Uganda Federal Alliance) and Tonny Junior Ruggette, Alex Okoi, Stephen Okwai-Mungu and Joanita Ngabiroch, all independent candidates.

Omwonya vowed to promote agricultural production in the district.

“We want to see change in the livelihood of the people, especially through the promotion of the various government programmes of Prosperity-for-All, National Agricultural Advisory Services and Northern Uganda Social Action Fund, where they can access funds to carry out production,” he said.

Omwonya called for unity with other candidates in the race.

Ruggette said he would involve those in the rural areas to develop the district.

He also promised to revive education in the district.
