MAKERERE University lecturers have again threatened to strike if the finance ministry fails to remit the sh5b partial payment for their long-awaited pension this week.

MAKERERE University lecturers have again threatened to strike if the finance ministry fails to remit the sh5b partial payment for their long-awaited pension this week.

The university staff last month suspended their sit-down strike over the sh16b pension cash the National Insurance Corporation (NIC) owes them, following the Government’s offer to clear the debt.

According to the directive given by President Yoweri Museveni, sh5b would be remitted in two weeks, and another sh5b in a period not exceeding two months. However, Dr. Tanga Odoi, the chairman of the lecturers’ association, told New Vision yesterday that they were yet to receive the sh5b.

Finance minister Syda Bbumba said a special audit was on course to establish the right amount of money owed to Makerere.

She said the costs of the audit, estimated at sh500m, would be met by the Government. Initially, NIC and Makerere were supposed to meet the bill.

According to the letter the minister wrote to Makerere committing itself to sort out the wrangle, if the audit report showed that NIC owes Makerere more than sh10b, the balance would be paid by the Government. If it showed the insurers owe the university less, the matter will be solved amicably.
