Bomb materials found on bus

SECURITY operatives have arrested two people in connection with bomb-making materials recovered from a bus during a check at the Uganda Revenue Authority terminal in Kampala.

SECURITY operatives have arrested two people in connection with bomb-making materials recovered from a bus during a check at the Uganda Revenue Authority terminal in Kampala.

Security sources said the materials are used in sparking off explosions.

The bus registration number KBK 902B, belonging to Gateway, a transport company was travelling from Kenya and the suspicious material was recovered by customs security at the URA headquarters at 8:30am.

The URA headquarters were sealed off and clients who had come to clear their merchandise were told to evacuate the premises and locked outside the main gate as personnel from the anti-terror unit and bomb disposal unit were called in.

“There is security information that we are trying to verify and some materials were recovered from the bus. Some people were picked but I don’t know their numbers.

Security received information about the people on the busy and we were trailing them,” Vincent Sekatte, the police spokesperson said.

Sekatte said the suspects had been taken to the Rapid Response Unit (RRU) offices in Kireka for questioning. The arrested suspects’ identities were not disclosed, but they included the bus turn boy and a passenger.

A staff at the Stanbic Bank branch who did not want to be identified said that he had just turned up at the workplace when they were told to leave the premises. By yesterday afternoon, the bus remained impounded in the URA parking yard.

Last week, security in Soroti impounded a bus belonging to the same company as it transported 3,260 live bullets from Gulu to Busia.
