FORMER trade union leader Apollo Nyangasi was yesterday committed to the High Court to stand trial for the murder of his wife, Christine Dambio.

Kira Grade Two Magistrate Richard Nuwagira committed Nyangasi after the state prosecutor, Harriet Angom, produced committal papers, with instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to have the accused committed to the High Court.

It is alleged that Nyangasi beat Dambio to death over misunderstandings about property and accusations of infidelity. They had been married for 15 years.

He was charged with the murder on July 29, and has since been on remand at Luzira Prison.

A former chairman of the Uganda Health and Allied Workers Union, Nyangasi will now face the High Court, which has the power to try capital offences. He faces the death penalty upon conviction.

Dressed in a blue business suit, a maroon shirt and white canvass shoes, Nyangasi looked calm and composed as the indictment was read by the clerk.

Clutching a Bible, he raised his right hand and muttered, “God is good. I am a fighter.”

His in-laws, about 10 in number, stared at him in disbelief.

According to the summary of evidence prepared by the resident state attorney, Janet Kitimbo, prosecution will show that Nyangasi brutally murdered his wife at their matrimonial home in Kireka B zone, Wakiso district.

The DPP argues that Nyangasi “has no valid defence to the indictment preferred” and that he should be indicted as convicted.

He was subjected to a mental test and found to be normal.
