THE Lcal government minister, Adolf Mwesigye, has reviewed the contractual period for the management of the Jinja taxi park from one year to three years.

He told drivers under their umbrella body, the Jinja Taxi Operators Association (JITOA), that permanent contracts were being introduced to replace the tendering system.

He said the NRM policy stipulated that all taxi/bus parks be managed by the drivers, conductors and taxi owners themselves.

“If the park has its managers, then why tender it?” he asked, adding that tender issues encouraged corruption.

Mwesigye told the residents that about sh230bn had been secured by the central government for the reconstruction of Jinja Central Market and about US $4m would be injected into Napier market in the second phase. Construction works are expected to kick off next year. He revealed that the management of both markets would be in the hands of the vendors.

“The President had done a lot for Jinja, including granting it city status. You must also show your role by voting for him and all movement candidates,” he said.

The chairman of JITOA, Haji Kalidhi Miyingo, expressed concern over the high reserve price set by Jinja Municipal Council. He said indigenous drivers should be prioritised, while setting the reserve price. The reserve price currently stands at Sh.80m per month.
