LUGAZI University closed on Wednesday after holding its first and last graduation. The university had operated for only four years a total of 524 graduands were awarded degrees in various disciplines.
This year in May, the National Council for Higher Education had threatened to withdraw the provisional license of the university following inconsistencies in the university’s management.
During the campus ceremony, on the university, the chairman of the board of trustees, Alfred Higenyi, said it was not their wish or their plan to close the institution but unfortunate circumstances had led to its closure.
“When we started this institution in 2007, our mission was to generate men and women who would add value to the welbeing of society.
“The administration has gone through a lot of challenges which has finally led to the ugly situation. We tried our best but could not stretch beyond our abilities.
We appealed to Government and other potential partners, but everyone seemed to be too broke to make a heavy financial commitment with us,†Higenyi said.
He added: “due to huge debts in various banks, we contacted the ministry of defense, who took over both assets and liabilities to save us from total loss.
With effect from today, the premises belong to ministry of defense. We have instituted a skeleton office at Ntinda View College to settle any student queries.â€
