PEOPLE at Njeru taxi park in Buikwe district shocked the Local Government Minister, Adolf Mwesige, when they told him that they had resorted to easing themselves in polythene bags due to lack of a functional public toilet in the area.

Mwesige was in the area to commission the new NTODA offices at the UEB play ground in Njeru town council on Wednesday.

George Mudidi, the chairperson of the Njeru Taxi Owners and Drivers Association (NTODA), told the minister that they only had one public toilet, which broke down four months ago.

“We are on tension. The town council authorities have neglected us yet we pay taxes. We need your help to have more toilets constructed,” Mudidi said.

Mudidi reported that the rampant corruption in the area was affecting service delivery, adding that councilors were fond of awarding themselves tenders and yet they did not deliver.

Moses Mushabe, the NRM flag- bearer for the Njeru East B parish councillor seat said that many people had lost their lives due to lack of street lights in the area.

In response to the reports, the town clerk, Charles Musoke Kayizzi, said he was still new in the office that he inherited with a lot of issues.

Mwesige, promised to work closely with the local leadership to address the burning issues.

He also warned local governments against asking President Museveni to carry out minor projects like toilets and street lights during his campaigns.

“Toilets are the responsibility of the councils and if they don’t have funds, they should approach my ministry for assistance,” Mwesige said.

He asked the town clerk to make a budget for the park, street lights and other minor projects for financial assistance from his ministry.

However, Mwesige said all these goals would be attained when they support the ruling party during the 2011 elections.
