LEISURE Tec darts club came of age when they captured the national darts league in Kitgum last month. The feat nearly spelt the doom of the formerly invincible Mulago darts club.

The Kampala zone champions justified their status when they also bagged the Inter-Club knockout trophy in Jinja.

The Leisure Tec’s cruise came in the shadows of Mulago who have been weighed down by cash crisis.

The former champions nearly lost all the silverware in the locker except the Super Cup.

That was the bad side of the financial crisis engulfed the Kampala zone league-forcing many clubs falling out of the league.

Uganda darts Association (UDA) secretary David Tabaro blamed the financial woes on lack of club opens.

“Somehow clubs were no so organized in arranging fundraising opens. I hope the situation will improve next season,” prayed Tabaro.

Police Darts club and Silversprings were among the causalities of the finance bug that forced them out midway the Kampala zone league.

While Kampala suffered, the sport picked up steadily in northern region under the new decentralization of the management of the game.

Under the Northern Region Darts Organisation several clubs mushroomed in Gulu, Arua, Nebbi, Lira and Kitgum districts.

Gulu sized the initiative by lifting the Inter-district championship in Arua in July.

However Uganda Prisons ‘sniper’ Ronald kalete stole the honour after edging out Kenyans in the Uganda Open in Mbarara.

Ronald Kalete returned to the victory podium when he edged Geoffrey Onen in the Uganda Open darts championship in Mbarara on Sunday.

The Uganda Prisons guru beat Geoffrey Onen 4-3 in an-all Ugandan final at Zana Complex. It was the first time Uganda fended off Kenya’s dominance in the men’s singles after four years in the annual meet.

On the way to the final, Kalete beat Kenya top seed Ibrahim Ambuta 3-0 while Onen saw off former champion Peter Wanjie 3-2 in the last 16.
