RESIDENTS of Buliisa district have hailed President Yoweri Museveni for fulfilling his promise of ensuring the return of their land. The land had been occupied by the Balalo (herdsmen) for over five years.

Melda Asimwe, a resident of Kigoingo village, said she had lost over two acres of land as a result of the occupation.

“These Balalo just came, grabbed our land and fenced it off. We have been mistreated by some of them for a long time,” Asimwe said on Thursday during the handover of the Buliisa land to the indigenous residents.

“We are happy that the President intervened to help us regain our land through proper channels of the law,” she said.

The coordinator of intelligences services, Gen. David Tinyefuza, presided over the handover function at Waiga Primary School.

Over 400 Balalo families were evicted from the land. The eviction followed a Supreme Court ruling that the herdsmen had occupied the land illegally.

Gen. Tinyefuza oversaw the exercise that was conducted by Police and the army.

The Buliisa Woman MP, Beatrice Mpairwe, said President Museveni and the NRM Government should be supported in the coming elections for ensuring the return of the land to indigenous Bagungu.

“Our people will be able to cultivate land and even grow cotton without interference. There is need for area residents to start acquiring leases for this land,” she said.

The Bunyoro Kingdom premier, Eng. Yambeezi Kiiza, hailed the NRM Government for ensuring that the Bagungu and Alulu got their land back.

The Buliisa MP, Stephen Biraahwa Mukitale, also thanked the Government and advised the people in the area to support Government programmes.

Buliisa LC5 Chairman Fred Lukumu urged residents in the area to support the NRM Government and vote for President Yoweri Museveni in the coming elections.

General Tinyefuza told the residents to occupy the land and start cultivating it immediately.
