REFEREE Ronnie Kalema has at last acquired a FIFA badge after a four-year attempt.

Kalema replaced Brian Nsubuga, who missed a FIFA fitness test conducted by FIFA instructors Carlos Henriques and Mark Muzengo at Namboole in September.

Kalema, an employee of Tripartite, is one of three new names on the list forwarded to global soccer governing body for the 2011 FIFA referees and their assistants.

“It was a real struggle and I can say, I worked for it,” said the referee, who nearly gave up the profession.

Kalema was beaten into comma by soldiers in the then Mbale United FC during the 1999 Super Mini League.

He had been in charge of a semi-final between Kakira and Mbale United and, after Kakira won, Mbale fans accused him of having been biased.

Gulu’s Lee Okello replaced Nsubuga Mubanda, who also missed the test, while Nakitta Malex Nkumbi replaced Amina Nakayiza who failed.
