RELATIVES of the people killed at Kasubi Tombs after the inferno have demanded compensation from the Government and the culprits punished.

The relatives were testifying before the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the fire at Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) Conference Hall, at Lugogo yesterday.

Gunfire rocked the royal burial grounds as security fired to make way for President Yoweri Museveni to inspect the site after fire gutted the main house where four Buganda’s kings are buried of. Three people died and many others were injured.

Seventy year old Misaeri Kamya of Buwate in Kira told the commission, chaired by Justice Steven George Engwau, that his nephew, Kalooli Serwadda, was killed during the shooting. He said he was left with the responsibility of looking after Serwadda’s children, since his parents were also dead.

Faridah Nalubidde of Masanafu said her brother Haruna Kakumba, with whom she was staying was among the dead. She said his body was found at Mulago hospital.

When asked by Engwau what she wanted the commission to do for her, Nalubidde urged them to investigate the incident and compensate her.

The army had explained that it shot at the mob in self-defence after it tried to block the President from reaching the site.

A spokesperson of the Presidential Guard Brigade, Lt. Eddy Candiga, said the forces were provoked. He listed the forces at the site as the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence, Internal Security Organisation, the Police, Military Police and the Special Forces.

army spokesperson Felix Kulayigye said: “The mob threw stones at them (security people) leaving some injured. When soldiers are stoned, what do you expect them to do?”

The commission also questioned Prince George Jjemba Kimbugwe about a woman who was said to have been burnt in the main house, but he denied having told one of the Nnalinya’s that he had seen the body of a woman being carried out of the house.
