DR Kizza Besigye, the Inter-party Cooperation (IPC) presidential candidate, feels it is his responsibility to remove President Yoweri Museveni from power because he treated him during the bush war.

“I have more responsibility than all the other Ugandans because I am responsible for bringing Museveni to power. If I had not treated Museveni during the war, maybe these problems would not have been there,” Besigye said.

Besigye made the remarks while addressing his first campaign rally in Kitgum district at Orom trading centre on Sunday.

Besigye was a personal doctor to President Museveni during the National Resistance Army bush war, from 1980-1985.

“I consider that I contributed to bringing problems to Uganda. I therefore have a duty and responsibility to do everything to solve the problems we brought. Fortunately, we are heading there,” Besigye said.

Besigye said although it was possible to remove the ruling party from power, it would not be easy because the NRM party had access to state resources. He said the playing field was not level because of this.

Besigye also noted that the results of the past three elections showed that President Museveni’s popularity was waning; with votes dropping by 10% in each election.

“My answer to the question of whether it is possible to defeat Museveni is a definite yes and he will be defeated. We are facing all the money Government is pouring in to confuse our people because they made everybody poor,” he said.

Besigye said what used to be favourable areas for Museveni like Buganda, Busoga and Bunyoro sub-regions were no longer going to vote for him after the many problems the Government inflicted on the people in the past few years.

He said his government would correct the wrongs the NRM Government had committed against Ugandans.

Besigye also made a stopover at Omiya Anyima, Mucwini, the home of his UPC rival, Dr Olara Otunnu, before addressing a major rally at Boma grounds in Kitgum town later in the evening.

The Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Prof. Ogenga Latigo, and MP Nandala Mafabi joined his rally at Mucwini.

Mafabi told residents that the Government wanted to run down the Bugisu Cooperative Union like they did the one in Acholi sub-region, and to subject farmers to more problems.
