THE patrons screamed, “Hapi nu ya”, Kulika omwaka (congratulations for surviving). These were Asians, Germans and a number of Ugandan brothers and sisters. Some rubbed fists, others hugged and whispered endearments.

This was the mood at Just Kicking in Kamwokya as the folks saw the old year go and scream Karibu (welcome) to a brand-new 2003. The UK-based Alive Band pelted Robbie Williams, Spice Girls tunes and anything under the sun. The more beer you took the better they sounded.

Entry fee was sh10,000, a beer went for sh2000 — nebigendera (snacks. An the patrons did zoom into Just Kicking to wolf down loads of nyama choma (roast beef) and guzzle any tribe of beer in stock.

While I mentally made my New Year’s resolutions, I focused my Canon Camera to take a shot of a lady dancer, a palm clapped it. Within the twinkling of an eye, I was engulfed in a hearty hug.

“Honey bunch,” cooed the lady.

“I wish you a happy (New Year) on condition that you do not publish my picture. Later I was assured lots of good luck and bigger hugs. I am quitting clubbing, a thought crossed my mind.

Elsewhere, people were dancing the night away. The night was engulfed in defeating screams of Happy New Year in different styles, languages and moods! Children were on the dance floor - forget the under-18 not-allowed law.

Later, cruising through Kampala City, the human traffic jam was heavy. Taxi touts were calling passengers. Flesh peddlers were displaying their products in skirts smaller than my handkerchief. This is a hectic season in their trade, I guess.

At 3:00pm, I retired out of town and got Kireka town still bustling with activity. A preacher was calling upon lost hearts to come back to God this year. Then the skies opened up to rain.

“It is going to be a year of plenty,” said an elderly lady. Let us just hope so.
