VICTORIA Insglass Limited, the firm which won the Kampala City Council (KCC) contract to collect license fees in the central division, wants its contract renewed.
The old contract, which expired in December, stipulated that the firm collects sh2.5bn in taxes from the central division within a period of 12 months, beginning January 2001.
The group collected sh1.9bn which was 87% of the required target.
“We are ready to take on the challenge if given the chance. We will build on the past experience to make this thing work,” said Herbert Tumwesigye, Victoria Insglass’s managing director.
Tumwesigyehowever said that although they had already received a letter from the Town Clerk’s office allowing them to continue collecting taxes, they were still awaiting the official renewing of the contract.
Simon Muhumuza, the KCC senior public relations officer, said that they had seen their revenue collections double since they hired tax collection firms two years ago.
He said that about 30 markets in the city have been privatised.
“We are looking at extending the contract period from one year to three, in order to ensure continuity in the tax collection and management function,” he said. Ends
